Personally I've always had problems with OpenJDK on Ubuntu. Eclipse just doesn't run the same on the OpenJDK as it does on the SunJDK.

It happens to me too and considering my past experience with Eclipse I don't think OpenJDK is to be blamed - I just uninstalled Eclipse and went with IntelliJ IDEA. Works fine.
