truly a sad state of things. i love this topic and plan to read the book but i dont expect most people to care - the only mantra in software rn is to go as fast as possible on shitty features and burn people out.
of course above assessment is about the general state of big tech co’s. some pockets of sanity out there still at smaller companies but not many!
This bot posts a tautology (always true statement) every day. They aren't very useful. Sampling from all true mathematics is like sampling from all instruction sequences that don't crash. The important part of computer programming isn't finding valid instruction sequences, it's finding the useful ones that do what the customer wants.
What you're describing is the IndieWeb, I feel like if you're going to call something the "old web" the effort probably should be to actually recreate it a little more faithfully
Obviously, it partly depends on the implementation machine, how big a hole the tables blow in your cache, how fast the multiplies are, etc.
But it probably also hugely depends on the format that you want your trits in. If you use them unpacked, e.g. one trit per byte, then even if you're using tables, you still have to do a lot of manipulation (e.g. either shifting and oring, or having different tables, and a table lookup per trit and adding together to get the binary).
You’re talking across the issue. The demand is real because it is cheap. The demand is being generated by OpenAI and Anthropic selling inference below cost on fixed price plans. If everyone was paying the actual costs then demand would fall through the floor. The legal tools you’re looking at use barely any compute. They’re not driving the compute demand. You can validate this by asking how much they are spending on API usage. A company spending $100,000 per month on a frontier model via an API is the equivalent of… 10 or so OpenAI and Anthropic fixed price plan customers. Are these legal tools spending hundreds of millions per year on the frontier models?
"Yes, ..." is how I notice all the models (4-5 that I use) in the last week or so have begun saying "No, ..." except for Kimi. I ask a lot of questions in the form of "Question about the feature: does it allow for ..." and the answer will reliably start with "Yes, the feature exists and does this..." and later "However, ..." giving the information I need. It's actually kind of uncanny. I've started testing identical prompts across models, just to clearly see the "Yes, ..." with the "..but.." buried.
I think most people would find that two or three definition is all they really need. 1080p h264 at high bit rate for compatibility on the local network and low bit rate 1080p for streaming remotely or to save space in local downloads for a trip.
Yeah I did a project with ESP32 and micropython recently and getting the proof of concept up was very very quick. The agent I was using also had no problem writing drivers for peripherals that didnt already have micropython drivers (I seem to recall it ported C or Arduino reference code)
I must object. Because this is derivation, not composition. German is noteworthy for its long compositional word formations (though many other language are, too, e.g., Finnish). German can do derivation, too, but not significantly more than English (and the verb prefix 'out-' is hard to map into German in this case). For admiring derivation, you'd have to point to, e.g., Greenlandic instead (e.g. _iliorfigeqatigiissariaqaraluarput_ roughly 'they should work together' (from the Declaration of Human Rights)).

We have societies designed by the default choice. If that choice is walkable streets, low cost electric buses, dense neighbourhoods (mostly I mean you can walk for miles along streets and parks and shops without crossing a car park)
Then you get far less car use. People aren’t stupid, but living in downtown Houston means you have far less choice about driving everywhere than living in suburban Amsterdam

There are 2 "german" words. One refers to what were previously called Teutonic people, from the name they used themselves, which was later changed to the name used in Latin by Caesar for them.
The second "german" word, which is also spelled "germane" comes from a completely unrelated Latin word which refers to siblings who share both parents, whence "hermano" in Spanish.
The second sense "germane" seems older in English. Perhaps it already existed as a Latin borrowing in Old English.
Otherwise, perhaps the author has used "Germanstuff" because no word for Titans existed in Old English and "titanium" was discovered and named by a German, i.e. by Klaproth, from whom a lot of chemical element names have come.
